The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation is a charitable
organization that raises funds to support the Thunder Bay
Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC). Most of our financial
assistance is directed to medical equipment purchases, but
we also support a variety of TBRHSC healthcare projects, educational
programs and research as needed. Helping to ensure quality
patient care for the residents of Thunder Bay and Northwestern
Ontario is our top priority.

On Wednesday, October 10, Northwestern Ontario’s first
Angioplasty procedures were performed at Thunder Bay Regional
Health Sciences Centre. During the first year of the program,
250 patients will receive Angioplasty in the cardiac catheterization
lab. This is cause for celebration!
But the need for Angioplasty exceeds 250 patients per year.
We need to do better.
A second cardiac catheterization lab will accommodate over
500 Angioplasty patients per year. Without the second lab,
many Northwestern Ontario patients will still be required
to access the service outside of this community.
$1.5 million is needed to help purchase the necessary equipment
and realize the full potential to save lives with Angioplasty
closer to home. We simply must save the lives of more of our
family members, friends and neighbours, in our own community.
Your donation makes it possible.

Northwestern Ontario has one of the highest rates of
cardiac disease in the country. As a community we need
to ensure that cardiac patients have access to the best
care possible. That is why we will always raise funds
to support services and equipment for cardiac patients
in our community through the “Save
a Heart” cardiac program. With your help, our
Health Sciences Centre will be the cardiac centre of Northwestern
Ontario. |
Our Cardiology Team requires state-of-the-art equipment to
provide patients with world-class cardiac services. Through
“Save a Heart”, donors have helped to purchase
life-saving diagnostic equipment and provided the necessary
equipment to complete a Cardiac Catheterization Lab. Each
new piece of equipment impacts thousands of patients and reduces
the need for patients to leave the region for service.
It is vitally important that we continue to expand and increase
out cardiology capabilities because:
- Heart disease is one of the leading causes of premature
death in Northwestern Ontario
- Cardiac disease accounts for one out of every two
deaths in our area annually
- On average, 600 people in our region die from cardiac
disease.
When you contribute to “Save a Heart”, you are
helping provide the necessary tools to quickly diagnose and
effectively treat cardiac patients. You are saving lives!
Our Grateful
Patient Program is one of the most popular giving programs
at the Foundation. It was instituted at the request of many
of our patients who felt a need to give something back in
recognition of the excellent care they received from our professional
healthcare team.
In the past two years, the Foundation has provided $3 million
of world class medical equipment to our Centre. Some of this
equipment includes:
Cardiovascular Imaging System - The highly
sophisticated Cardiovascular Imaging System provides multiple
complex images of the arteries to determine arterial blockage.
Picture Archive Communication System (PACS)
- Diagnostic images will be stored and viewed on PACS. When
a diagnostic procedure is completed, the images will be
available online for physicians within seconds.
Hemodynamic System - A Hemodynamic System
manages all clinical, image and administration data relative
to the patient’s vital statistics.
MRI - A second MRI will allow us to serve
16,000 patients annually.

Donations from past patients have directly supported these
key equipment purchases. In fact, chances are you or
a loved one has benefited in some way. We are extremely appreciative of
this generosity that helps us ensure state-of-the-art equipment and technology is available
for future patient care needs. To find out more about
